  • SKELETONWITCH, KYLESA team up for “Southern Discomfort,” SXSW

This spring, Ohio’s mighty SKELETONWITCH and Georgia lords (and lordess) of sludge KYLESA will embark on the hessian odyssey that is the “Southern Discomfort” tour, a co-headlining trek that – not counting performances by both bands at the Scion Rock Fest in Atlanta – kicks off March 13 in Charlotte, N.C. Included among Southern Discomfort’s destinations is a stop in Austin, Tex., where both bands will appear at South By Southwest (SXSW). Special guest Black Tusk will lend support nightly with their heavy metal punk ‘n’ roll mayhem.

SKELETONWITCH is currently hard at work on the follow-up to 2007’s much-acclaimed Beyond the Permafrost. The new record is scheduled for a late 2009 release. Meanwhile, KYLESA’s new slab of psychedelic heft, “Static Tensions,” drops on March 17. A new song, “Said And Done,” is currently streaming at www.myspace.com/kylesa.

  • SuidAkrA to release new album, announce North American tour

With the rise in popularity in the Pagan/Celtic Metal Scene, one of the true pioneers of the Genre is ready to take the United States scene by storm. Over their fourteen year history, SuidAkrA have stayed true to their roots and the sound that they have become known for. The German Celtic metallers are returning full steam with their ninth studio album; Crógacht Combining fast melodic death metal, Irish folk music, and a torrent of harmonies, SuidAkrA proves yet again that they possess the ability to blend several different influences into their unique sound. To put a spin on things, new elements have been introduced, like traditional instruments (bagpipes, banjo, tin whistles), a sixteen member choir and epic orchestral arrangements.

Recorded at Gernart Studios with producer Martin Muchwalter, Crógacht delivers an aural assault. In addition to that, the eyes and mind of the listener will also be pleased, as famous Belgian graphic artists Kris Verwimp is responsible not only for the magnificent artwork in the digipack and 16-page booklet, but also for the lyrics of this fascinating concept album. Crógacht, meaning bravery, is based on one of the most dramatic tales in Irish mythology. It tells the story of the hero Cuchulainn’s epic journey to the Isle of Skye, where he seeks to learn the arts of war from the Scythian warrior woman Scathach. The decisions he then has to make set the events in motion that will lead up to his son Conlaoch’s tragic fate…

With overwhelming reactions to their 2006 release, Caledonia, and their November 2008 DVD/Best of CD, 13 Years of Celtic Wartunes, SuidAkrA have performed at over 200 live shows (including the Wacken Open Air Festival five times), and successfully completed several tours in Europe, Russia, and a first-ever American tour. SuidAkrA will take part in the four week Pagan Knights North American tour starting in February 2009 before rocking stages all over Europe and beyond.

Crógacht will be released on March 3rd, 2009. Press copies are available now; interviews available on the tour and otherwise.

  • LION'S SHARE New Album Artwork Unveiled

Swedish melodic heavy metal masters LION'S SHARE has unveiled the cover art for its upcoming sixth full-length album, "Dark Hours".

LION'S SHARE will release its new album in late March 2009 via Blistering Records. The follow-up to 2007's "Emotional Coma" was mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren (OPETH, SYMPHONY X, PARADISE LOST, AMON AMARTH) and features guest appearances by SYMPHONY X guitarist Mike Romeo (guest solo on "Behind The Curtain"), and drummers Conny Pettersson (from Earache Records death metal act ANATA) and Richard Evensand (CHIMAIRA, SOILWORK).

    "Dark Hours" track listing:
    01. Judas Must Die
    02. Phantom Rider
    03. Demon In Your Mind
    04. Heavy Cross To Bear
    05. The Bottomless Pit
    06. Full Metal Jacket
    07. The Presidio 27
    08. Barker Ranch
    09. Napalm Nights
    10. Space Scam
    11. Behind The Curtain
    12. King Of All The Kings (bonus track – limited-edition digipak and Japanese version)

The band states: "The new songs are simply awesome and everybody that has heard it thinks it's our best album to date. The red thread lyric-wise on this album is that all songs are about things that happened in the late Sixties; a decade known for many good things. However, we're not describing the happy times of the Sixties: We give you the 'Dark Hours'. Musically, it's more straight-forward and faster than ever. The songs are filled with energy and great hooks."

LION'S SHARE's most recent album, "Emotional Coma", was released in the U.S. January 29th, via Locomotive Music. The CD was issued by AFM Records in Europe and Spiritual Beast in Japan/Asia and features guest solos from ex-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick, and ex-MEGADETH guitarist Glen Drover.

  • JOETOWN MOVING FORWARD IN '09, ISSUES NAMM RECAP AND CAMPAIGN UPDATE

With accolades still pouring in from his hard-hitting studio album from last year, 'Pills and Ammo,' one-man metal machine Joetown continues to spread the word, as he recently spent a memorable day at the NAMM convention. Highlights of his visit would be when Joetown jammed onstage for the BEHRINGER 20th anniversary party, along with such rock legends as Chris Slade (AC/DC, The Firm), Kip Winger (Winger), Earl Slick (John Lennon, David Bowie), Bruce Kulick (KISS), and Mark Hudson (Aerosmith producer, Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp).

"Those guys kinda flipped," recalls Joetown. "Mark Hudson stopped the show and said that I was an exceptional singer and could share the stage with those guys any day, anywhere. Chris Slade also said that I should be aware that it is rare to have such vocal ability and range - this is from a guy that played with Paul Rodgers and Brian Johnson!" As a result of this killer jam, Joetown was invited to jam at the next Rock 'n' Roll Fantasy Camp in Hollywood, coming up in late April.

And if that wasn't enough, Joetown got to meet one of his guitar heroes up close at NAMM. "Met and talked for a while with Robbie Kreiger, legendary guitarist for the Doors. We plugged into a few of the BUGERA amps and discussed his classic tone, trading the guitar back and forth until he played classic riffs like 'Roadhouse Blues' and 'Backdoor Man.' Kinda mind-boggling to hear those riffs played right in front of you - the Doors had a huge influence on me."

Both experiences would probably be enough for any red blood American metal musician, but Joetown is not your average shredder. He also performed songs from 'Pills and Ammo' to a packed room at the BUGERA AMPLIFIER BOOTH daily, attended the ARTIST RELATIONS.com private NAMM pre-show event, which is a special showing of gear to select artists for endorsement purposes. As a result, Joetown will be exclusively supporting products from the following companies: N-Tune onboard guitar tuning system, Seymour Duncan Pickups JB model, Quarter Pounder (Strat/Tele), Quarter Pounder Bassline, Dean Markley Stage Tuner, and BREVERB modeling reverb plug-in for Protools. All this activity would leave anyone parched, so Joetown wound up wetting his whistle – by drinking Jägermeister with GWAR!

That said, 'Pills and Ammo' is still very much creating a buzz on the streets, as it has reached #7 Most Added (with 21 Adds) on FMQB, and #6 Most Added (with 50 Adds) on CMJ.

And on the retail front, expect to see Joetown in the FYE chain racks this month throughout the US Northeast.

  • SACRED OATH LAUNCH NEW WEBSITE

"Sacred Oath," the self-titled third studio album from the legendary cult power metal band, was produced and engineered by Rob Thorne at his studio Angel Thorne Music in Connecticut.

Says Thorne, "We wrote, tracked, and mixed this record in 12 weeks, about one-fifth the time we spent with Darkness Visible. The band is just on fire, riding on the high we experienced with the successful tour and the release of the live disc."

The line-up is in fact the same that appears on the live album 'Till Death Do Us Part "(2008) - Kenny Evans on drums, Bill Smith on guitar, Scott Waite on bass, and Rob Thorne on vocals and guitar. There are 10 songs on the new disc. Thorne, who has been the primary songwriter in the band from the beginning, wrote 9 and co-wrote the tenth with Evans.

    Songs are as follows:

    Paradise Lost
    Blood Storm
    Voodoo Dolls
    Buried Alive
    Counting Zeros
    Caught In the Arc
    High and Mighty
    Sacred Oath
    Scourge of Sin
    Hunt For the Fallen Angel

Running time on the disc is about 50 minutes. Favorite track on the album? "Ooooh," says Thorne, "I love so many tracks on this disc, but I'd have to say Counting Zeros is my choice TODAY (laughs). We've always been a concept-oriented band, and that song really sums up the lyrical theme of this record."

When pressed on whether this is a concept-album, Thorne smiles. "Two powers could be at it again."

  • BENEATH THE MASSACRE recaps European tour, plots another

Canadian tech-death quartet kicks off "Montreal Assault" tour next week

Road warriors BENEATH THE MASSACRE, whose recently released technical death opus Dystopia debuted at #22 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, kicks off another North American tour this week. The "Montreal Assault" tour, which will see the band play alongside Despised Icon, Carnifex, The Plasmarifle and labelmates Neuraxis, continues through March 1, after which BTM will headline two weeks of shows in Eastern Canada.

"We're all very excited to participate in the 'Montreal Assault' tour, and more importantly, Despised Icon’s first headlining tour in the U.S.," says vocalist Elliot Desgagnes. "They’ve been good friends of ours for years and always supportive of our band, and we feel privileged to go on that tour as direct support."

After "Montreal Assault," BTM – who kicked off their new record cycle with a Canadian tour alongside Necrophagist (Summer Slaughter Canada) and an American trek with Suicide Silence – will then return to Europe for the just-announced "Thrash and Burn" tour, co-headlined by Bleeding Through and Darkest Hour. BTM just returned from a month-long European tour alongside Cryptopsy, and the band looks forward to heading overseas once again.

"Being our biggest influence when we first started to play death metal years ago, it was amazing to share the stage and bus with the crazy guys in Cryptopsy," Desgagnes says. "Although we both come from Montreal, it was the first time we were getting to hang out with them and it was great. We also got to play with none other than Entombed! All and all, it was a great tour and were proud to have been on it.

"The two first times we went to Europe," he continues, "we were on straight-up death metal bills with bands like Misery Index and Cryptopsy. We feel that we'll be playing in front of a different crowd this time around, so we're stoked and a little anxious at the same time – but I believe BTM fans will be at the shows in big numbers, and we'll be able to turn the crowd into our own."

  • The Right To Rocklahoma – KEEL Confirmed For Rocklahoma 2009!

HOLLYWOOD, CA - On Monday, January 26th, Ron Keel announced on “Eddie Trunk Live” that the KEEL Reunion has been confirmed for a prime slot on the Rocklahoma 2009 Main Stage.

KEEL – the band that gave you “The Right To Rock” – is back in action for their 25th Anniversary Reunion, performing and recording together for the first time in 20 years. Ron, along with guitarists Marc Ferrari & Bryan Jay, drummer Dwain Miller, and bassist Geno Arce, will be delivering all the hits: “Because The Night,” “Somebody’s Waiting,” “Rock N Roll Outlaw,” “Tears Of Fire,” and of course one of the defining anthems of 80’s metal “The Right To Rock.”

KEEL also announced signing with one of hard rock’s heaviest hitters – Maryland-based Chavis Records – with plans to release a new KEEL CD by summertime.

“We are so proud to have such a prestigious spot on the Rocklahoma bill,” Ron states. “This festival is the big one that started it all, and was certainly one of our goals when we reunited. We can promise you, when KEEL hits that stage we are going to pack 20 years worth of energy and sweat into our 1-hour show.”

  • Queensryche - New Concept Album "American Soldier" Available March 31 From Atco

    THE EYES OF A SOLDIER

Queensrÿche Salutes The Troops With American Soldier

Concept Album Inspired By Veterans’ Stories Examines The Consequences Of War From The Soldiers’ Perspective

Album Available March 31 From Atco/Rhino; U.S. Tour To Begin April 16 In Seattle

LOS ANGELES — Queensrÿche envisions war through the eyes of a soldier with the band’s twelfth studio release, the epic concept album AMERICAN SOLDIER. The ambitious album encompasses a dozen songs inspired by numerous interviews with veterans conducted by Geoff Tate, the group’s singer and chief songwriter, who was intent on telling their story using their words. After speaking with soldiers who served in various conflicts—from World War II to Iraq—Tate turned their firsthand experiences from the frontlines into an unflinching musical examination of the life of a solider and the consequences of war. AMERICAN SOLDIER will be available from Atco/Rhino on March 31 for a suggested list price of $18.98 (CD) and $9.99 (digital).

Tate, Michael Wilton (guitar), Ed Jackson (bass) and Scott Rockenfield (drums) recorded the album in 2008 over the course of nine months. The idea for AMERICAN SOLDIER, Tate says, came from hearing stories from fans that are veterans, as well as his own father, who served in both Korea and Vietnam. “My father was a career military man, but until very recently he never spoke about what he went through. I think that reticence is true of a lot of veterans, which means most people never truly understand what it means to be a soldier at war. Hearing what he and some of our fans have endured made me want to share their stories with the world. This is an album about the soldiers, for the soldiers, as told by the soldiers themselves.”

Those stories resonate at the heart of AMERICAN SOLDIER, imbuing each song with vivid details about both the emotional and physical impacts of war, evoking war zone battles (“Middle Of Hell”), sacrifice (“The Killer”), loss (“If I Were King”), the longing for home (“Remember Me”), and adjusting to society after returning from war (“Man Down!”).

Tate recorded many of his interviews with the soldiers, and some dialogue from these discussions is mixed into several of tracks, allowing the soldiers’ own words to help tell their compelling stories. The band also brought a few of the soldiers into the studio with them to record vocals. The verses of the track “Unafraid” feature the voices of Chris Devine, a Vietnam veteran, and Sean Lenahan, a veteran of Somalia, recalling their war experiences while Tate provides the anthemic chorus. Also making a guest vocal appearance is Tate’s 10-year-old daughter Emily on the gripping duet “Home Again,” which examines the emotional toll of war from two perspectives, with Geoff singing from the soldier’s point of view and his daughter singing from the viewpoint of the child left behind.

Making the album, Tate says, was an enlightening process. “I was surprised to learn how little has changed through the generations. I spoke with a Vietnam vet whose experience wasn’t all that different from a soldier who fought in Somalia almost 30 years later. But what surprised me the most was how antiwar most soldiers are. To me, that makes their sacrifices even more moving.”

Soon after the release of AMERICAN SOLDIER, Queensrÿche will launch an extensive spring tour of the U.S., with international dates to follow later in 2009. The shows will be presented in three suites, with the band performing sets from AMERICAN SOLDIER, Rage For Order, and Empire. The first date of the tour will be April 16 at Snoqualmie Casino in the band’s hometown of Seattle.

  • Augury gets signed by Nuclear Blast!

AUGURY is a band for all the fans out there who like their music really progressive!

Think NECROPHAGIST meets DREAM THEATER meets OPETH, but with lots of other influences as well! What you should do is to check out the amazingly cool bassplaying by Forest!! Their new album was produced by JF Dagenais of KATAKLYSM and contains some of the most versatile musicianship you will ever hear! Canada has always delivered some cool technical and progressive bands and AUGURY is a prime example for this! Their new songs that we heard on MySpace blew us away and there was only one logical thing for us to do - sign them!

  • ENSLAVED TAKE HOME THIRD NORWEGIAN GRAMMY

For the third time in five years, ENSLAVED have won the Spellemann Award (the Norwegian equivalent to the American Grammy) for Best Metal Album 2008 with their latest offering, Vertebrae. The other nominated bands were Keep of Kalessin and Benea Reach.

ENSLAVED commented: "We're very honored to get our third Grammy! The party was good, we had a good time. We think the Grammy committee was very generous in giving all the artists two whole pitchers of ice water and selling 0.3 liters of flat beer for 7.5 Euros in the bar. Luckily, we robbed a bank on our way there and could afford getting absolutely smashed. We're having a rough Monday here. Thanks!"

ENSLAVED won Spellemann Awards for Best Metal Album in 2006 for Ruun and in 2004 for Isa.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Vertebrae sold over 1,100 copies in the United States the first week of its release. The album debuted at #11 on the Billboard Hard Music chart and at #49 on the Heatseekers (Top New Artist) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. Vertebrae won Terrorizer Magazine’s coveted “Album of the Year” award for 2008. Other “Best of 2008” rankings include:

    · Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles: #4
    · Metal Edge: #9
    · Metal Maniacs: #11
    · Revolver Magazine: #14
    · Decibel Magazine: #16
    · Kerrang!: #19

  • NEURAXIS prepares for upcoming tours, announces video premiere

Montreal technical death veterans NEURAXIS – whose new album, The Thin Line Between, was named one of Metal Edge's Top 20 releases of 2008 – are currently prepping for back-to-back tours. First up is the "Montreal Assault" tour, which will see the band play alongside Despised Icon, Carnifex, The Plasmarifle and labelmates Beneath The Massacre.

"I'm looking forward to the Montreal Assault tour, mainly since we have been friends with almost all the bands for so many years now," says guitarist Rob Milley. "Some may know that Alex (Erian, Despised Icon vocalist) was once our drummer, and Maynard (Moore, The Plasmarifle vocalist) was once our vocalist, so for me it's like coming full-circle touring with these guys. Beneath The Massacre have always been close with us and I'm looking forward to meeting the dudes in Carnifex. Come out to this tour and have a good time with all of us."

"Montreal Assault" will be quickly followed by a tour alongside the legendary Cannibal Corpse. NEURAXIS says they're honored to have been hand-picked as support.

"To have the privilege to tour with such legends is truly an honor," says vocalist Alex Leblanc. "I've been listening to Cannibal Corpse forever, and I just can't wait to tear it up every night and share the stage with these icons."

In other NEURAXIS news, the band's new music video for "Darkness Prevails" will premiere on MetalSucks and Metal Injection later this week. The band filmed the clip with director Chris Alsop last fall.

  • CARCASS: Noth American Tour Dates Announced!

Reunited U.K. melo-death/gore-grind legends, CARCASS, will return to the United States this March for the “Exhumed to Consume II” tour. The follow up to last years highly successful “Exhume to Consume” tour will feature SUICIDE SILENCE, SAMAEL, ARSIS and PSYCROPTIC plus a few special guests on select dates. Vocalist/bassist and all around optimistic person Jeff Walker commented:

"Well, I'm pleased to announce that CARCASS is gonna settle it's unresolved scores in the U.S.! There was some slight whimpers of discontent that we didn't hit some cities such as Chicago and Denver last time round - places that were always hot spots of enthusiasm for us. So we're coming back in March to finish off our unsettled business! We seemed to have had a profound influence on your economy and gas prices have gotten cheaper haha! That's doesn't mean we’re not gonna come through and provide some value for your buck with some old (and new) school friends and comrades such as SUFFOCATION, SAMAEL, BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, EXODUS, SUICIDE SILENCE etc. - check out locally as for who is on the bill where! And hey, I couldn't think of anywhere better to be on my 40th birthday than the Sunshine Theatre in Albuquerque, New Mexico! We promise this will be the last time we darken your shores (I said that with my fingers crossed behind my back)!"

  • Justin Weis (Hammers of Misfortune, Ludicra, Slough Feg) to Master New CORMORANT Album

CORMORANT bassist/vocalist Arthur von Nagel checked in this weekend with a quick update from the studio. The band has decided to enlist Justin Weis at Trakworx Studios (who has worked with Hammers of Misfortune, Ludicra, Slough Feg, and hundreds of others) to do the MASTERING the new Cormorant record - it was MIXED and produced by Billy Anderson.

According to von Nagel, "The analog equipment, affordability and Slough Feg/Hammers of Misfortune/Ludicra/Sleepytime Gorilla Museum resume were pretty hard to resist! Plus, we like that he's done hip-hop albums, because those have to sound perfect in terms of production. Our drummer's big into rap, and his eyes bugged out at some of the artists that Justin has worked with. Anything Slough Feg-related is enough for me!"

CORMORANT are currently finishing up the recording of their as-yet-untitled debut with Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins, Sleep, Primordial) at Sharkbite Studios in Oakland, CA. The band is aiming for an early-to-mid Spring release, and are currently searching for a label.

Both bands, A Sorrowful Dream and Desolate Ways, are long time friends and already played together several times in Brazil and we always admired their music. Having the opportunity to contribute for their forthcoming album makes me feel very flattered and anxious for the result. Even both bands playing similar genres, there is a huge difference between our music, which makes everything more interesting. • Platinum Danish Band VOLBEAT To Release Album In The U.S.

Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood on Mascot Records U.S.A March 17th

HOLLYWOOD, CA – VOLBEAT will unleash their 2nd U.S. album, Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, March 17th on Mascot Records U.S.A. This new rock-a-billy metal masterpiece arrives on the tail end of their successful 2008 release Rock The Rebel/Metal The Devil.

With the word “Originality” being a much abused word in the world of rock-‘n-roll – It is very appropriate to describe VOLBEAT. The four piece combines influences from the 50’s to current mosh-pit metal that puts you in a death grip. It’s this imposing blend that has created the U.S.A. to become diehard fans. The new CD also contains a respectful and powerful interpretation of I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry originally by Hank Williams Sr.

The title Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood refers to a story that connects seven of the thirteen (official) songs on the album: Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood, Find That Soul, Maybellene I Hofteholder, Still Counting, Back To Prom, Light A Way and A Broken Man And The Dawn. It’s a tale about a travelling band whose leader is a man that once got shot in the desert and left for dead. During the bands tour he went on a mission to find the mysterious killer that put seven bullets in his body. While travelling from city to city the band ends up in a small town called Ten House City performing for just a handful of people in the local bar. The songs offer observations of the people in the rundown venue, made by the bandleader. This storyline will continue to be a connecting theme and developed as VOLBEAT writes future albums.

While the whole concept of ‘Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood’ is intriguing; it’s above all a knock out of a hard rock/metal album. “It’s one of our goals to improve every time”, explains singer and guitar player Michael Poulsen. “That’s the main reason of our existence. Every tour had to be better than the previous one. We also want every album to be better than the one before. We wanted to improve on the song writing with Guitar Gangsters & Cadillac Blood. I think we succeeded.” VOLBEAT is comprised of vocalist/guitarist Michael Poulsen, guitarist Thomas Bredahl, bassist Anders Kjølholm and drummer Jon Larsen.

  • Absu premiere track from new album

Texas-based mythological occult metal band Absu have posted the song “Girra’s Temple” from their self-titled new album due in stores February 24 on their official MySpace page. The song offers fans the first listen to material on the anxiously awaited new album that features an all-star array of guest musicians. Bring your browser to www.myspace.com/absu.

Absu is the first new recording from the trio since their highly acclaimed album Tara released in 2001. Produced by the band with mixing assistance from J.T. Longoria (King Diamond, Solitude Aeternus), the album features artwork from Belgian artist Kris Verwimp. Drummer/vocalist Proscriptor says of the album’s lyrical concepts, "I am concentrating more on Sumerian-based occult themes of magick and mythology versus the Celtic aspect of my previous writings, which was heavily expressed on the last few Absu studio albums. Musically speaking, the material will be quite similar to Tara, but with more of a '70s progressive/psychedelic texture within it.”

Absu came to international prominence with the release of their debut, Barathrum: VITRIOL in 1992. Originally released via Gothic Records, the label later licensed the record to France’s Osmose Productions (Immortal, Enslaved, Marduk). Absu would establish a solid relationship with the label and thus release all later recordings via the renowned independent, including the highly regarded Tara (2001). In 2007 the band would announce a new partnership with London-based Candlelight Records.

Track listing for Absu is: 1. Between The Absu Of Eridu & Erech, 2. Night Fire Canonization, 3. Amy, 4. Nunbarshegunu, 5. 13 Globes, 6. …Of The Dead Who Never Rest In Their Tombs Are The Attendance Of Familiar Spirits…Including: A.) Diversified Signs Inscribed, B.) Our Earth Of Black, C.) Voor, 7. Magic(k) Square Cipher, 8. In The Name Of Auebothiabathabaithobeuee, 9. Girra's Temple, 10. Those Of The Void Will Re-Enter, 11. Sceptre Command, 12. Ye Uttuku Spells, 13.
