Interviewer: Jeffrey D. Adkins
Guitarist/vocalist Dave Matrise recently set some time aside to answer some questions for us at MetalFanatix.com. His band Jungle Rot has just release their new disc ěWar Zoneî over the summer, and he and the band continue to create their brand of death metal. Over the years Dave and his bandmates have shown their true metal colors with brutal creations and intense live shows that get their fans and metalheads alike into a furious rampage taking out others in the mosh pit. I now invite you to read on to find out just what Mr. Matrise had to sayÖ
Metal Fanatix: Hey Dave, thanks for
taking some time to answer some questions for us at MetalFanatix.com.
First off, for those have been under a rock for the last decade plus,
could you tell us a little bit about the history of the band? When
did you start? What did you set out to do with the creation of Jungle
Rot?
Dave Matrise: Jungle Rot has been around
for 12 years, if you haven’t heard of us by now, you probably
never will. We started back in ’94, we have six CD’s released
and we are working on our seventh right now. We always knew we wanted
this band to be more groovy than noisy. The sole purpose was to play
Brutal Shows. For more Bio information you guys should check out our
page on my space. (www.myspace.com/junglerot)
Metal Fanatix: How would you describe
Jungle Rot’s sound to a perfect stranger?
Dave Matrise: Death Groove
Metal Fanatix: I have always wondered
this for years, how did you come up with the great metal name Jungle
Rot?
Dave Matrise: Jungle Rot was an answer
to a multiple choice question back on a High School Test.
Metal Fanatix: With your new disc “War
Zone,” as with your past releases, war in general seems to be
a reoccurring theme. Is there a fascination with war within the band?
What aspects of war do you prefer to use when you write those songs?
Any points you are trying to get across?
Dave Matrise: Yes but no, we like the
Jungle and camouflage, the fans kind of pushed us that way, most of
the songs we write about are on struggling and surviving.
Metal Fanatix: How did the writing process
go with “War Zone”? Anything different than normal? Do
you guys start with the riffs, the music, or something else?
Dave Matrise: We usually start with
Riffs and then build from there.
Metal Fanatix: In your opinion, how
does “War Zone” rank with the other Jungle Rot discs?
Dave Matrise: Good Songs, some songs
were a bit rushed, but it sounds like us, we should be applauded for
sticking to our sound, please feel free to leave us comments on my
space and let us know what you think.
Metal Fanatix: Favorite tracks off the
new disc? Any particular reasons?
Dave Matrise: "Strong Shall Survive"
and "They Gave Their Lives," these two songs are for the
bad asses in the Pit!
Metal Fanatix: What is the first thing
you think of when I mention these songs?:
Dave Matrise:
Gore Bag: Fun…this is always
a fun song to play
Red Skies: Don’t really care for
this song, it’s more of a studio song, we never really play
it live.
Symbols of Hate: UCF Wrestling, a heavy
weight champ used it to walk into and we just saw it on DVD.
Victims of Violence: Classic Jungle
Rot
Metal Fanatix: Do you have any special
techniques to get ready for a show? Like pre-show preparation or rituals?
Tell me about them.
Dave Matrise: We get together about
a half hour or so before we go on, regroup and get ready for battle.
Metal Fanatix: Looks like you have an
awesome tour coming up. What can audiences expect from the Jungle
Rot crew?
Dave Matrise: This is a very touchy
subject right now, as you probably heard by now this tour has been
cancelled due to our wonderful industry. The promoter fell thru, another
agency was picked up, and for some reason, this guy doesn’t
want to work with Jungle Rot, so then it went to someone else, and
they don’t want to pay us… we haven’t toured the
US in two years and I blame it all on the Industry not wanting to
take care of us Hard Working Bands.
Metal Fanatix: What has been your favorite
tour? Why?
Dave Matrise: Deicide was my favorite
because the whole package, everyone on this tour got along great.
Metal Fanatix: What are your favorite
bands to tour with? Have any good stories you can tell us?
Dave Matrise: Krisiun, a three piece
band from Brazil, it was just amazing how these guys could perform
every night!
Metal Fanatix: If we were to take a
look at your music collection, what would we see? Any favorites? Bands
that you appreciate from the past and today.
Dave Matrise: Everything I have is old
school; I really don’t listen to much music.
Metal Fanatix: What is the most upsetting
thing to you about music today? What would you change if you could?
Dave Matrise: Lack of Respect for the
Hard Working Bands from the Industry.
Metal Fanatix: If you weren’t
in a band, what would you being doing instead?
Dave Matrise: Hunting
Metal Fanatix: Where do you see yourself
in 10 years from now?
Dave Matrise: Hunting
Metal Fanatix: Well Dave, I think I
have taken up enough of your time. Thanks again for doing this interview
for us. Do you have any famous last words for the metal world?
Dave Matrise: Good Luck to everyone.
