On Zero
Hour’s new disc “A Fragile Mind” the music can
be technical, but a little confusing. Supposedly this is for fans
of Spiral Architect, Meshuggah, Cynic, Fates Warning and Dream Theater.
Maybe a little, they kind of have a muddled unique sound, but I understand
the progressive stuff. Musically they are kinda weird, even goofy.
It might be the structures of the songs, since they use so many different
elements. They combine hard rock, metal, progressive rock and maybe
even a few goth rock elements, but when a note gives you a smirk because
of how much it sounds out of place, they might be getting too creative.
With the vocals, at times it reminded me of a gothic version of Alice
In Chains. I don’t know why, but I think it’s the first
thing I thought of as I listened to the disc. Vocals especially remind
me of Lane Staley. Dino Alden produced this CD. You may have heard
of him from his work with Marty Friedman and Racer X. Zero Hour have
ability but it doesn’t seem they put it to use properly all
the time. It’s like they rather showcase their talents instead
of writing as a group. I guess I just don’t really care for
this disc, or I’m misunderstanding their idea completely.
