As you go through Withered’s sophomore full-length studio effort “Folie Circulaire” you will see the variation in their music. Some parts have a calming feel, others breakdown to a metal groove, and even other that are fastidious. These parts are comparable to Neurosis, Mastodon, Pelican, Nacthmystium, Goatwhore and a host of dark and dreary creations. The unique combinations of guitar riffs always keep you guessing. I personally like the fast riffing with rhythmic drums and blast beats. These are technical and precise drums. At the helm are growling vocals, a more distinctive version of death metal vocals. When a band poses a different than usual style I like to say it can be a challenge to listen to. Instruments have to be plated cohesively for this style to work. I think they pulled it off. “Folie Circulaire” has ten songs on its track list, making this a forty-six minute CD an adventure. Besides the intro and the fifth track “The Forsaken Truth” which is an instrumental with sound effects, the album keeps full bodied and sludgy. The instrumental kinda breaks up the album. Featured on this disc is a cover of Necrophobic's “Into Armageddon.” Also Barney Greenway (Napalm Death) makes a guest vocal appearance on a couple tracks “The Fated Breath” and “Clamor Beneath.” Withered’s “Folie Circulaire” has a lot going for it, but in my opinion it’s not quite there. However, it’s nice to hear something that’s not like every other band out there. Rating: 77 Reviewed By: Jeffrey D. Adkins |
