Even though Wet
Animal was founded in 1995 this is their self-titled debut album. Rick
Wartell of Trouble started Wet Animal. Trouble drummer Jeff “Oly”
Olson is also in the band. As you might figure, Wet Animal has similarities
with Trouble. It has that old-school feel to it. Heavy, groove driven rock
riffs, certain ones are 80’s thrash sounding, others are the 80’s
hard rock sound. But it also has similarities with Alice In Chains too.
Vocally and even riff selection wise. It becomes eerie how similar they
are at times, kind of gives you a chill. I’m sure that’s part
of the reason why the choruses seems to stick in your head. It also has
to be partially due to the passion in the way they play. The energy when
they rock out makes you want to listen. This disc also has a natural sound
to it; not overproduced. It’s comparable to a live performance. There
are also some acoustic driven tracks and a couple tracks that are too pop
sounding for my taste, like the track “Nomads Land.” The last
track on the disc is a cover of Pentagram’s “Relentless.”
It’s not a bad cover, and it’s a cool way to end this album.
