Coming forth are some of the most elite cult
members in the US black metal underground under the title of Twilight.
Let me first introduce Wrest (Leviathan/Lurker of Chalice), Malefic
(Xasthur), Hildolf (Draguar), Imperial (Krieg) and Azentrius (Nachtmystium).
Kind of a super-group of sorts. Twilight plays misanthropic and raw
black metal in the truest form of the phrase. There are 9 tracks and
almost 45 minutes of experimental pandemonium. Stuff like this is
often very tough to review because the music is good for the most
part, but the production sucks goat nads. This, of course, was pointed
out by Varg of Burzum by explaining it is the true form of music without
any dubbed perfection (via... the garage-like recordings of bands
like these). Well, this style certainly has its imperfections. It
is an art, it is an inspiration, but it isn't exactly a music style
come easy. I'm not thrilled with much on this release for the fact
the production sucks ass, BUT I DO admire the sense of originality
in some of the odd approaches Twilight takes with their various compromised
backgrounds. Such as the dual low and high screams for vox, constant
speed picking with crazy guitar effects, over-the-top drumming (unlike
most black metal bands) and well-placed keys. I really don't hear
anything catchy, overly melodic, or even vaguely aggressive in most
respects. You do, however, have a unique blend of raw black metal
(ala Xasthur) & eerie atmosphere (ala Vinterriket). For me the
production makes this a lesser album, but I still give it a thumbs
up...
