Trivium - Shogun (Roadrunner Records) - Back
‘Shogun’ is Trivium’s forth record to date and their most mature sounding. I thought they committed career suicide with their last record – “The Crusade”, but these young upstarts have recorded an album that should take them to the next level of success. Trivium has incorporated various styles and influences into their songs, such as Death metal, Metalcore and your traditional Heavy metal. Check out the brutal “Torn Between Scylla And Charybdis” and you’ll see what I mean.

What you’ll find on this release is dazzling solos, multilayered choruses and tempo changes which are all over these well thought out tracks. Branded, the new “Metallica” Trivium has certainly moved away from sounding like their heroes and has made a much more mature and well-rounded album. Matt Heafy’s uses at least 4 different vocal styles, from clean vocals, midrange snarl, operatic and the ever-fearful cookie monster growls. If there was a - how many riffs could you fit into one song category in the Guinness book of Records - I’m sure Trivium would be top contenders.

Having the pleasure earlier this year to see Trivium play some of these brand new songs live, it only made me more interested in hearing what the band had to offer on Shogun. Stand out tracks were hard to pick, but if pressed, I would say “Kirisute Gomen”, “Insurrection”, “Into The mouth Of Hell”, The Calamity and the epic “Shogun”. Trivium also does a credible cover of Iron Maiden’s classic metal masterpiece “Iron Maiden”.

Trivium maybe a young band in age, but musically their influences go all the way back to metal’s beginnings and the various styles of metal showcased on ‘Shogun’ proves that Trivium are here for the long haul. If you have been caught up in all the negativity and controversy that has surrounded this band and their sound, then I recommend that you grab a copy of their latest album ‘Shogun’, you may be surprised at how far these guys have come in such a short time!
