Not that I dislike the older sound, but I definitely
wasn't expecting it. I thought this album was going to be similar to "Prey,"
but alas! “Amanethes” is the new 2008 release and I must say
- WOW! More of a shocked “wow” than an actual musical “wow.”
I was hoping to hear some “Astral Sleep” or “Wildhoney”
vocals again sometime. However, this album still features a lot of modern
Tiamat style
ones, but there are death vocals as well. More of an in-between style, actually!
I would say there is a good mix here. This is also quite a different, uniquely
written album. Tiamat has taken another step. A lot of the guitar-work is
still very much in the gothic rock, sort of upbeat essence with some speedy
melodic parts as well. Very catchy, as the case would be. Just check out
"Until the Hellhounds Sleep Again" or "Temple of the Crescent
Moon" for further indication. The percussive department (bass &
drums) is probably the most surprising upgrade. Lots and lots of double
kick and even some blast beats from the drum side of things. The bass is
tuned extremely low it seems or perhaps, just mixed to sound crushingly
heavy. Whatever the case may be, this album is heavier and darker than anything
they have done since the days of old. I love this stuff!! They should keep
doing this kind of stuff!! This will be a hit or miss album for some, so
be mindful. I also think a lot of older fans will return and newer ones
won't be disappointed either. 14 tracks, an hour of enjoyment. It's like
a heavy, gothic Pink Floyd! High recommendation.
