Thyrfing - Hels Vite (Regain Records) - Back
Formed in 1995, Thyrfing were among the early innovators of what became Viking Metal. “Hels Vite”, their 6th full length marks a turning point for the band, in that it is the first album without long time vocalist Thomas Vaananen. Replacing him is accomplished former Naglefar vocalist Jens Ryden. Also of note, is the departure of second guitar player Henrik Svegsjo. Thyrfing’s lineup had been remarkably stable until this point making it hard not to wonder how this turnover would effect the band’s sound.

Thankfully, “Hels Vite” avoids any major change in the bands direction, instead progressing in a way that feels natural. “Hels Vite” focuses more on mid-paced material than most of Thryfing’s previous work. Big rhythmic riffs blended with somber melodies are the meat and potatoes of this album. Keyboards play a major role as well, having a constant presence in the background and adding an orchestral quality to the music. All of this is really classic Thyrfing, it just seems a step slower and a bit more deliberate than on previous albums. Ryden’s vocal performance is excellent, his phrasing is spot on and he manages to convey a lot of feeling with his guttural rasp. Bits of clean vocals that often sound like a chant or choir provide brief moments of respite from Ryden’s harsh vocals. All told, the vocals on “Hels Vite” are a strong point.

While I don’t think that “Hels Vite” is Thyrfing’s best work, it would have to rank in the top half of the band's catalogue quality-wise. This is a big sounding album that feels classy and well thought out from start to finish. It is refreshing to hear a band play this style without touching on any of the clichés that have become commonplace with the recent Viking/folk metal boom. Despite the lack of any true stand out qualities, as a complete package “Hels Vite” is both memorable and enjoyable.
