Silencer - Divisions (F-Bomb Records) - Back
Silencer have dwelled in the underground for several years, and have put out a several releases in that time. In the earlier days the band had a power metal feel that has somehow developed into a modern thrash metalcore sound. That’s quite a difference in sound, but quality music can still be found throughout their latest effort “Divisions” on F-Bomb Records.

The band uses a balance between brutality, technicality and catchiness. On “Divisions” the better songs seem to have a better balance. They can be thrashy at times, progressive or metalcore oriented, though that may not be intentional. Call it, progressive, thrash-core? Mix Strapping Young Lad and God Forbid and you get close; other variations could include sounds from bands like The Black Dahlia Murder, Chimaira, Slipknot, Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, Soilwork and Meshuggah. Some of these bands are among their influences, but other worthy mentions are Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Fear Factory, Slayer, Carcass, Morbid Angel, Testament, etc.

There are lots of catchy riffs, many of these are heavy, and easy to get into. Heavy modern riffs, quick pulse-like riffs, some really chunky heavy riffs, technical riffs with drums, many of these riffs pump like a well oiled machine. Also some experimenting can be heard every so often, nothing that is detrimental, it’s cool to hear some not so common styles. However sometimes these experiments seem a bit unorganized, like they rushed choosing riffs to a couple parts.

“Divisions” has a number of nice aggressive ripping solos too...some of the parts are absolutely sick. Why don't all other bands in similar traits do the same? How can cool solos like these become passé? They are a strong positive for me on this record along with the heavy and catchy riffing and the yelling vocal technique. The singing with a grimace vocals are pretty decent too.

These 12 tracks stay pretty relentless throughout. There are a few things they could tweak on “Divisions” but Silencer has a solid album anyhow. Looking forward to more from this band in future!
