Sentenced - The Funeral Album (Century Media) - Back
I’m sad to see Sentenced releasing their last album, but all good things have to come to an end. There will be no reunion or comeback; this is it, the last album. “The Funeral Album” is just that, it’s a celebration of the bands passing. The record didn’t hit me at first like the last 2 albums, but it grows on you quite a bit. It seems more rock oriented than the other releases, but the typical raspy singing vocals should sound familiar. Since it’s their last album I think they tried a little different variation to what to get everything out they didn’t do before. Making this CD show more progression than their previous efforts…a harmonica in “Despair-Ridden Hearts,” a short “extreme metal” instrumental, and choruses in “End Of The Road” and “Vengeance Is Mine.” Many bands will have a short instrumental to break up their album; generally they are acoustic. What Sentenced did was the opposite. They offset their acoustic/electric Goth rockin’ metal sound with a fast paced, heavy death or black instrumental. I thought it was a good idea because it’s different than their recent music and it reminds me of their early days. Influences from the producer Hiili Hiilesmaa (HIM, Moonspell, Apocalyptica) can be seen on this CD, especially a little of the HIM sound on the track “Lower The Flags.” The last track is conveniently called “End of the Road.” Well that’s about it, a well-fit end to a great metal band. Sentenced bids a fond farewell with their 8th and final album “The Funeral Album.”
