Satyricon - The Age of Nero (Roadrunner Records) - Back
Norwegian metallers Satyricon certainly don’t have to prove anything to their critics! Since forming in 1990 Satyricon has grown musically with every album they’ve made and the 2006 masterpiece ‘Now Diabolical’ definitely put Satyricon on to the world stage and had all the bands fans and critics sitting up and taking notice! The band recently returned with their sixth studio album ‘Age of Nero’ and the band has certainly out done themselves once again! By no stretch are Satyricon selling out! If anything I think the band have returned to their primitive black metal roots, simple and primitive song structures with aggressive feel! Frost has been given a noticeably lengthier creative leash and proceeds to do what he arguably does better than any other drummer in the black metal scene. The same can be said of his band mate; Satyr expertly delivers the album's every lyric through his now familiar gritted-teeth snarl. With a soundtrack this dark, aggressive and devastating, Satyr’s vocals shine through and have you hanging on his every word. ‘Commando’ is the perfect track to open the ‘Age of Nero’ and has become one of my favorites on the album. Not only is it the perfect track for opening the album, I can imagine that this will be a great way for the band to kick off their new live set! One of the heaviest song on the album is ‘Black Crow on a Tombstone’, there is no doubt that you will be blasting this song instantly and thrashing your head around like there’s no tomorrow! Frost pounding drum work really shines through on this one and Satyr is every bit as amazing as expected! For the black metal enthusiasts and die-hard fans tracks such as ‘My skin is Cold’ and ‘Die by My Hand’ will be songs that you will immediately gravitate towards, heavy, dark, aggressive, brutal combined with melodic and progressive metal changes. From start to finish there isn’t anything really bad that stands out on the album! The production is awesome, very heavy and full of depth! Nothing sounds over produced at all! The vocals, bass, guitars and drums are mixed very well making it a pleasurable listening experience. Stand out tracks that I recommend you all listen to are ‘Commando’, Die by my Hand’ Signs of the Trident’ and ‘Last Man Standing’. I don’t doubt that there will be metal fans out there, who will not even bother to give this album the time of day, but I do recommend everyone does check it out, great heavy grooves, thrashing, fast metal and killer riffs! I can only imagine how amazing these songs are going to be in a live setting!
