Poisonblack - A Dead Heavy Day (Century Media Records) - Back
Poisonblack started in 2000, and is mostly known for having Ville Laihiala, the vocalist of the disbanded Sentenced. I was a big fan of Sentenced when I heard that they had separated. Poisonblack was my partial fix for that empty spot, not that they make the same music, as Poisonblack is its own animal, but something reminiscent with a different direction…

For those that haven't been adventurous enough to check out Poisonblack over the years, they are a gothic metal band from Oulu, Finland. There music is a more stripped down version of Sentenced with more radio appeal but just as passionate. With the former Sentenced singer at the helm, as well as guitar, they are basically a combination of sounds from Sentenced and HIM. Doom rock, death rock, or goth rock...anyway you call it, we are definitely rockin' here.

“A Dead Heavy Day” has tons of catchy groove driven riffs. A few of these riffs will rip your face off though. They are mixed with quality rhythms throughout the album to form the foundation of this disc. There are some decent solos too, nothing crazy, but enough; just what Poisonblack needs. Vocals are exactly what you would expect from Ville...dirtied up singing with a grimace. The keys add an essential element of atmosphere as they give the music the goth/doom aura.

What really struck me on these twelve tracks and nearly and hour was the choruses in the songs. They are consistently good from track to track all around for the band.

Personally I don’t dig Poisonblack as much as Sentenced, but if you are looking for a viable replacement, or some band to fill that void, then you can't go wrong with Poisonblack. Rock out, with your cock out!
