IIIIRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH!!!!! A"nile"ation
of the Wicked, if you will, has been unleashed upon our rather putrid
doorsteps! As Nile’s
4th official full-length release, you can expect absolute brutality
from one of the death metal genres finest ever. Aside from brutality...
you can also blast your gut with menacing technicality, ruthless percussive
hammering that'll curl your nostril hairs and an affinity for ancient
atmospheres. Karl Sanders & co. have, without doubt, outdone themselves
(no way... ? ha). Some of the tracks have that super sonic-bludgeoning,
while the others are crushingly epic and at times even melodic. As
with "Cast Down the Heretic" and "The Burning Pits
of the Duat"...enough speed for even a crack addict. Then there
is "User-Maat-Re" and "Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten",
which are more epic than the Sahara Deserts' broad-sandscape with
song-lengths in the near 10-minute range. In contrast, though, there
really is none except for the song lengths. Each and every track (aside
from the instrumentals) is a great heavy dominion of epic and crushingly
aggressive tempos with plenty of sophistication. Even the instrumental
tracks leave you with a scarred and uneasy sensibility of what used
to be long ago. With this release, Nile may very well be the greatest
death metal band in the genre currently... or at least, one of about
five. Hail to User-Maat-Re and the followers to come!!!!!
