After three albums of solid death/doom metal,
Ireland's Mourning
Beloveth have struck gold with their forth release, "A Disease
for the Ages." The album's thick, leaden riffs plod thunderously along
like an unstoppable force of nature. As in nature, there is beauty to be
found even in this stark landscape. Uplifting melodies simmer just beneath
the surface, rising from time to time, only to be swept away by the overwhelming
landslide doom. In similar contrast, lead vocalist Darren Moore's anguished
death growl is complemented by soaring clean vocals courtesy of guitarist
Frank Brennan. With this constant juxtaposition of hope and dread, Mourning
Beloveth manage to create a palpable sense of sorrow in a way that is rare
even in this genre. They have distilled the death/doom genre down it's very
essence. Using these raw bones as building blocks, Mourning Beloveth have
created the most pure realization of this genre's potential that I have
heard in years. "A Disease for the Ages" is a near perfect album
and I highly recommend it to all doom fans.
