Before I give my very critical opinion on the
new Motley Crue album,
I do want to make it very clear for the record that I have been a Motley
fan since 1986, I had heard that the new Motley Crue album was going to
be very much in the same vein as 'Shout at the Devil' which was quite appealing
to me… until I heard it! The Crue are back with their long awaited
new album ‘Saint of Los Angeles’ and too be perfectly honest
I'd be extremely happy to be still waiting. Currently touring as Crue fest
with a number of other bands, and coming off the success of Nikki Sixx's
great book ‘The Heroin Diaries’ it seems to me that this album
was rushed! The songwriting falls far below my standards when it comes to
Motley Crue! This is the band that gave us 'Kickstart My Heart', 'Too Fast
For Love', 'Girls Girls Girls' and 'All I need'. All of the songs on the
current album don't even come close to these classics. I have no doubt that
Motley Crue fans like myself will go out and grab a copy for the collection
but I guarantee it will be one of the least played Motley Crue albums in
any fans collection. 'Chicks = Trouble' is a song that just left me shaking
my head, I hated it, musically it was okay with rockin’ elements of
bands such as Rose Tattoo and AC/DC, but overall it sucked. 'What's It Gonna
Take To Make It' reminded me of a bad Nickelback track which one you ask….
All of them! 'Just another Psycho' was one of those songs that was reminiscent
of pop princess Pink's 'Family Portrait' just in a Motley way. As a massive
fan of the Crue I can't help but express with regret how much I disliked
this album. To make sure I gave it a fair review I have now listened to
the album in its entirety seven times and my opinion of certain songs has
not changed a bit! For everything that is wrong with the above mentioned
tracks there are also a few gems that will stand out such as 'Muther Fucker
Of The Year', 'Saints Of Los Angeles' (which could have easily been a hit
on ‘Dr. Feelgood’), 'White Trash Circus' and my favorite song
on the album 'The Animal In Me'. The overall production for the album is
great but I don't doubt that there is a drum machine replacing T-bones signature
drumming in parts, this was most noticeable to me during the intro for 'This
Ain't a Lone Song'. Motley Crue has always been a band who has given their
all and tried to keep up with the ever radically changing times but I would
have much preferred they took a step back and just made the kick ass rockin'
album we were all hoping for! If this is the kind of album we are going
to get from a clean and sober Motley Crue then hand them back some smack!
'Saint of Los Angeles' is out now via Motley Records grab a copy if you
dare!
