Mar De Grises - Draining The Waterheart (Firebox Records) - Back
In the late summer of 2001, the funeral, death/doom band Mar De Grises formed in Chile. This country may not be the first place you think of when you think of metal bands, but Mar De Grises will put an end to that notion. Since their creation the band has done extensive touring in Europe and have put out a demo and their first album, "The Tatterdemalion Express," in 2004 on Firebox Records. Now their latest opus “Draining The Waterheart” is impressing metalheads worldwide.

Setting an atmosphere is what this band is about. Delicate, mystical, emotional and experimental atmospheres encompass this album. I personally see it more in an ambient progressive doom and melodic death vein. Think of bands like My Dying Bride, Anathema, Agalloch, Katatonia, Swallow The Sun, Novembers Doom, and Opeth.

The majority of these enchanting musicscapes are slow-paced, calm and melodic episodes that are constructed in a layered technique that makes their music fulfilling. The guitars pump out consistent quality riffs that work well with the atmosphere.

On the mic are death and clean vocals, and some whispered chanting mixed in with the music. I just wish you could hear them a tad bit louder. Certain parts get lost in the composition.

Most of the tunes are lengthy. 7 of the 8 tracks are over six minutes in length, with the two longest around eleven and thirteen minutes. All tallied up, “Draining The Waterheart” last for an hour.

If you are looking for melancholy metal, than look no further. Mar De Grises has made a good example of that technique. Personally I think it could use a boost of energy, however, when all is said and done, “Draining The Waterheart” is a valuable effort, and I’m sure they will increase the size of their fan base as a result.
