Kreator - Hordes Of Chaos (SPV) - Back
It’s hard to believe that European metal legends Kreator kick started their career in Essen Germany in 1982 under the name Tyrant aged in their early teens, before changing the name of the band to Tormentor before settling on Kreator in 1985. They recorded their first album ‘Endless Pain’ in ten days and the world was forever changed… for the better! Throughout Kreator’s career they have gone from strength to strength knocking down any barricades that stood in their path! Twenty-five years on Kreator are showing no signs of throwing in the towel, if anything they are putting a challenge out to all the newer bands and showing them just how the big boys do it! The German metal giants have just released their eleventh album ‘Hordes of Chaos’ and boys and girls this is thrash metal at its best! From the first note of the self-titled track you can hear the magic and energy that the guys created whilst recording ‘Hordes of Chaos’ in a live environment. The self-titled track blew me away. I love the whole live studio feel; it’s exhilarating and less predictable than anything Kreator have done in the past ten – fifteen years! Miland 'Mille' Petrozza’s tortured bark seems a bit more hoarse, manic and wild-eyed, adding to the frenzy. The ferocity unleashed on ‘Hordes of Chaos’ is truly amazing and leaves me speechless, ‘Absolute Misanthropy’ is a short, fast, blazing number that keeps it simple with a brooding midsection building up perfectly into a roaring finish that finds Mille practically foaming at the mouth and the band at full throttle. Mille opts for a harsher pub sing-along style in the chorus, instead of his old melodic whispery croon, and the guitars get a little lilt to them, the rhythms are still machine-gunning double-kick lockstep. ‘Hordes of Chaos’ has catchy songwriting, classic riffs, and true live energy making it an instant classic. At this point in their career Kreator have nothing to prove but ‘Hordes of Chaos’ has certainly set the bar high for any bands planning on releasing some killer thrash metal in 2009! From start to finish thrash metal fans will be craving more and more Kreator, some of the stand out tracks for me were ‘Escalation’, ‘Hordes of Chaos’, ‘Demon Prince’ and ‘Destroy what Destroys you’. The albums artwork is pure Kreator, I wouldn’t have expected anything less, I really loved the metal horned demon, eyes stitched shut and fangs showing… very cool indeed! Fans who have ordered the first wave of albums may also be fortunate enough to purchase the special edition which features a bonus DVD featuring the video clip for the first single ‘Hordes of Chaos’, A making of… report which shows the guys live in the studio putting the album together, as well as a couple of live clips. If you love your thrash metal than this will be the album that you want to get your hands on this year! ‘Hordes of Chaos’ is out now via Riot Entertainment / SPV.
