Korpiklaani has put out an album every year after they changed their name from Shaman except for 2004. Each of these folk metal efforts has showcased their appealing sound and have become great examples of what is so right about the genre. Some metalheads may become a bit maddened trying to keep up with a band that releases albums as regular as Korpliklaani but one things that still remains true, these guys rule! The folk metal stylings of Korpiklanni on “Karkelo” can really set a mood with a lively or gloomy atmosphere. They contrast from cheerful to melancholy, but all are done well. Most of the music is rhythmic in nature which intern makes these some very catchy tunes. The several layers of instruments keeps the music fresh and ads dynamics that many bands lack. There are several good guitar rhythms on the disc that keep you interested in the music. Most of the lyrics are in their native tongue, yet there are a couple tracks that use English for the vocals. Korpiklaani uses group chanting and grimacing lead vocals. However the folk metal instruments are the key as one might expect in folk metal band. Featuring the accordion with several other folk instruments like the violin, woodwinds, jouhikko and djembé. “Vodka” is the first track to get recognition on the album. Not only is it the opening track on “Karkelo” but also it’s the first single and video. There is another alcohol-laden song that will get your beer glass out to raise them high, “Bring Us Pints Of Beer.” Really this whole album is a great CD to listen to when you are drinking an ale with a bunch of friends. “Karkelo” is the soundtrack for any fine brewery. These rulers of folk metal have possibly written their best album. Cheers metal brethren! Rating: 92 Reviewed By: Jeffrey D. Adkins |
