Kernel - Servant Of God (Independent) - Back
The inception of Italian band Kernel occurred back in 2000 when Claudio Rampinini founded the group. Originally they started out jamming to hardcore/punk tunes. Over the years the band has gone through several lineup changes as well as a progression to a heavier, harder, and faster sound that they play today.

Kernel released multiple demos over the years that have culminated to their most recent effort “Servant Of God.” This is Kernel’s first full-length studio effort. It may have taken quite a few years to get this released, but for those that are into thrash this will be right up your alley. Think of heavy thrash bands in the vein of Sodom, Anthrax, and Slayer with a bit of their roots still showing. In other words, a bit of their original “core” sound can still be heard.

The band uses the change of pace to their advantage throughout the disc. It makes their music much more appealing that a constant pounding drone. There seems to be a nice contrast between the speedy and aggressive parts with the heavy groove driven riffs. You can definitely hear their influences of Anthrax, Overkill, Sodom, Slayer, and Sepultura. Within this heavy mix there are an assortment of solos. They are decent solos, but are also kind of basic. Vocals are performed with a yelling growl, similar to Sodom’s Angelripper.

Overall the nine tunes on “Servant Of God” should be a great steppingstone for Kernel to take off from. As with there are with many bands, there are parts that could be improved. There is something bland about this release that I can’t quite put my finger on, but nothing to bad to be much of a distraction. Probably just some common riffs or approaches that I’ve heard before, nothing out of the ordinary.
