On Intronaut’s
second release, their first for a major label (Century Media), the band
delves deeper into a variety of sounds and ideas to further develop their
music’s thick and knotted shape. On the surface, this album could
be viewed as perhaps a more diverse sounding Mastodon, full of monstrous
grinding riffs and a mix of gruff and raspy vocals. But take some time with
this thing, like I did, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by many
subtle textures that will reward you for your journey. Full of interesting
percussion rhythms, bendy bass tones, and pleasing harmonies hidden within
the sludge, “Prehistoricisms” is an obvious progression for
this band over debut album Void’s less diverse (though still interesting)
“wall of noise” approach. A patient ear may be required, but
I think this new album will satisfy fans of several types of the metal genre.
