Gales Of Avalon - Gales Of Avalon (Independent) - Back
Gales Of Avalon self-titled, debut EP comes all the way from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. What the band brings forth on this disc is their blend of black/death metal. Originally the band was a one-man project to write a black metal record that was dripping with Celtic folklore. The current lineup of the band consists of four members and has progressed more towards death and thrash all while keeping their roots

The pace changes throughout the CD; fast, medium and slow. This variation shows some of the dynamics the band can create all depending on how much black, death and thrash is needed for a particular part.

Most of the tracks on this EP can seem a bit bland. There are a few catchy, aggressive thrash riffs, along with the typical blast beats, and death vocals. Solos are ok, nothing too good. Piano is used in several parts too.

I only had one really problem with this CD. A few parts had odd riff selections, almost as if the band didn’t know what to put next in the song, or couldn’t find something to bridge the gap between elements. Sometimes this is a sign of a band trying to get their feet under them. I’m sure with a little more time Gales Of Avalon could mature and fix this setback.

Track 2, “Blasphemy Incarnate” has a really good aggressive element to it, and is my favorite track on this, five-tracks, twenty-two minutes plus, self-titled disc. I’m not totally sold on Gales of Avalon. We’ll have to be patient to see what they bring forth on their upcoming full-length.
