Not to be confused with the US band, this
particular band resides in Malta and is a doom-laden power metal outfit.
Iconoclast consists of only 4 songs (a MCD) but of these 4 tracks,
Forsaken
kind of kept things interesting enough for me to get through the near
35 minutes running time. Forsaken remind me of Candlemass and Solitude
Aeturnus with some references to Maiden and Sabbath (but heavier!).
At times, they are even capable of pulling off a King Diamond-like
atmosphere. Obviously with such epic song structures, a lot goes on.
Take the catchy slow doom-style riffs in "Where Angels Have Fallen".
One minute it's that, then you will have a punchier up-tempo sound
with an almost death metal feel. My favorite track, however, is "Via
Crucis (the Way of the Cross)". I love how it opens with female
vocals and acoustic guitar, and then suddenly goes right back into
their mid-paced and technical music style. I thought there should
be more death vox to cross with the power metal style. At times, it
sounds mediocre where the two styles meet. This is a step in the right
direction nonetheless. Good job!
