There is a certain mystique that surrounds the
band Deathspell Omega. While they pay tribute to other black metal elite,
they include a technique that sets them apart from the rest. For one thing,
you feel and evil presence due to the dark atmosphere and eerie melodies,
very pressing on your soul. Along with aggressive black metal riffing, speed
driven riffs (we are talking blistering fast), and intense blast beats,
“Kenose” is definitely for any true-black metal fan. Many bands
come to mind…Dark Funeral, Emperor, Burzum, Mayhem, Enslaved, Dissection,
Neurosis, Ved Buens Ende, etc. An album blessed with fire! Grim, elite,
progressive, black metal, what else could you want? They keep their dynamics
up, but changing their approach throughout each song. With a few more well
selected parts, this would have been way up their for me. This thirty-seven
minute CD has three well-written and lengthy tunes. Their length might be
one downfall of this album, but that’s only if you don’t appreciate
fully developed songs. The disc includes a 40-page booklet, which is enclosed
in a Digipack case.
