As the band self describes, they play Progressive, Symphonic, HyperMetal. It’s a distinctive and interesting genre that is dynamic, diverse and unique. There are plenty of blazing and rockin’ riffs. Some of these riffs are damn good. Other essential elements to their composition are the shredding solos and nice melodies. The keys add atmosphere to their songs. However, the drums sound like they are programmed, even though they may not be. It just doest have the rich sound that drums usually do. Much of the 10 songs over 35 minutes of arrangements are solid but few contrasting elements seem abrupt at times. Also, some of the chaotic parts seem to have no direction, but that may be the point? I almost want to hear some vocals, but that’s really against the bands ideals. The music does tell a story though, but it may make their songs sound more whole with a few vocal elements. Quality of the recording isn’t bad, however it could use some polishing because it does have a bit of the typical demo sound. It’s pretty rough a few times. I’m interested to see how this band develops. If the drums sounded more realistic and the recording was a little crisper it could make Dark Mass much more intriguing.
