Who or what is Creozoth? It sounds like something
from the Lord of the Rings. Creozoth is about a man who eats so much that
he explodes, like Monty Python, explains Lars Johansson. It’s also
a 12,000-year-old plant and a deadly poison that killed many railway workers.
So with that explanation, lets talk about what the band is about. Creozoth
calls Stockholm, Sweden home and features Lars Johansson and Jan Lindh of
Candlemass, Michael Storck of X-PLODE, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Tobbe Moen
(ex-Redfun, OZ). But you can really say that is Johansson’s band because
he wrote and produced the complete record himself. This self-titled disc
is the band’s first release and it can be described as rocking metal
with an edge. They take a rocking approach to the songs while having Sabbathy
sounding guitar riffs; or something akin to Down. Eighties metal influenced,
thrash oriented, and maybe a little of their doom influence has shined through
on this record. But don’t expect this to sound much like Candlemass.
These thirteen tunes nearly last for an hour and are faster paced than them
for the most part and more upbeat. Besides that there are some shredding
solos and the last couple tracks are short instrumentals. I wouldn’t
say this is a great disc, but definitely all-around solid effort.
