Conquest - End Of Days (Dark Star Records) - Back
After forming in late 1989, Conquest experimented with several metal styles ending with a thrashy power metal vibe that they use today. “End of Days” is their latest installment.

Conquest’s thrashy old school sound is influenced by Judas Priest, Metallica, and Slayer but also has a modern metal tinge. Not to dissimilar to Iced Earth.

Musically I dig the thrash riffs the most. Some of these riffs are damn heavy!! The catchiness of them really makes it hard hitting. Conversely, rather simple riffs offset some of these rather appealing riffs. Which isn’t always a bad thing. However, some of these parts seem too plain, they need an addition of something because it borders on being monotonous. There are some decent solos woven into this metal mayhem too.

Drums are adequate for this composition, even some stylings that remind me of AC/DC. At times the vocals remind me of a more pissed off version of Matt Barlow (Iced Earth). Derrick Brumley doesn’t totally sound like him, but similar variation while singing. He can hit high notes when needed or sing with a powerful grimace.

The eleven songs nearly fifty minutes on “End Of Days” are mostly solid. Though Conquest needs to be more creative or inventive to totally win me over. They have been around for quite some time and have accomplished plenty in that time, but I can’t shake this feeling that they remind me of a local band trying to make it big. It doesn’t sound that bad, just doesn’t sound that good either; almost the classic cliché of a dime a dozen type band.
