"Dystopia" is the second full length
from Montreal's Beneath
the Massacre. Beneath The Massacre play brutal, technical death metal
loaded with fast precise riffs, blasting drums and brutal breakdowns. While
Beneath the Massacre score high marks for intensity and technical skill,
in my opinion "Dystopia" has two fatal flaws. First and most glaring
is the production; this album (and their previous album) simply sound too
clean and clinical for death metal. Don't get me wrong, I like to be able
to hear everything that is going on, especially with a band this skilled.
Having said that, I am of the opinion that death metal generally benefits
from a little dirt being thrown into the mix. The second issue that I have
is with the song writing; while "Dystopia" contains numerous interesting
parts, as a whole the songs tend to blend together and are difficult to
remember. What you end up with is something that sounds like Fear Factory
playing a Suffocation album. Surely this idea will be very interesting to
some, but it doesn't do much for me. Even so, I see Beneath the Massacre
as a band worth following and I will certainly continue to check out their
music. I should also note, that these guys are far better live than on disc.
