Angra has been known for conceptual albums since their 1993 debut "Angels Cry" which actually featured a song about the classic novel “Wuthering Heights.” "Aurora Consurgens" follows this trend by taking the listener on a journey through grief, pity, depression, apathy, anger, and insecurity. Each song is written in Angra's patented in-your-face style comparable to being struck by lightning. One thing I really like about this album is the amount of diverse textures they employ. The opening song "Course Of Nature" begins with shakers and various percussion instruments. The song "Salvation: Suicide" is a dynamic and up-tempo song with intense guitar riffs and constant thundering drums. The album is not without its ballads either; "Breaking Ties," and "Abandoned Fate" are two heart-felt ballads about feeling helpless, lost, or just plain looking for death. On a lighter note, the songs "Voice Commanding You," and "Scream Your Heart Out" show Angra's ability to write extremely heavy and melodic songs at a very fast pace. Some say that this album isn't as good as their 2005 release "Temple Of Shadow" which I'm not as familiar with, however, I can say that from what I've heard, every Angra album is different from the last but I strongly recommend thiss album to fans of their prior work and to those who are interested. Awesome power metal record. Forget the nay-sayers, this album holds up to the Angra standard of heavy metal! Rating: 90 Reviewed By: Brian Grefrath |
